Queensland Vaulters dominate the 16th National Vaulting Championships
QLD Vaulter, Mckeira Cummings takes to the overseas stage!
Mckeira Cumming from ELLA Springs Vaulting Club, Gold Coast, Qld recently ventured overseas to compete in her first international CVI Vaulting competition – Pacific Cup CVI, Hollister California USA.
Mckeira had always dreamed of the opportunity to train with Devon Maitozo in USA on his horses so when she was invited to LA for her 3 week Semester One school holiday break it really was a dream come true. Even more so when we discovered that there was an opportunity to compete in her first CVI at the same time - Pacific Cup CVI Hollister CA 12-14 July. It was all a bit of a surprise & rush to get organised. Thanks to the amazing efforts of Equestrian Australia Administration & Vaulting selectors, last minute approvals and FEI applications were processed and Mckeira flew out to Los Angeles USA with her mum Sunday June 30. (One day earlier than scheduled as the official competition that our club was competing in Qld was postponed due to bad weather)!
On arrival in LA we met Devon and his horses! Then vaulters from 3 other countries. Columbia, Russia, America & Australia, total of 8-10 vaulters trained hard together for 10days in the lead up to the competition! It was a Multi-National force and loads of vaulting fun & fitness was shared from dawn till well after dark! The sometimes 40 degree heat forced the horse training to start at 7pm when shade came over the arena, finishing in the dark after 9pm. They worked hard and played hard in the hot dusty desert climate including runs through the canyons and up hills so steep they looked like they were walking up stairs. Cool down back at the pool was a welcome reward and another excuse for some more fun & water games including hand stands on the step rails! Vaulting has the amazing way of bringing people of all ages, different cultures and all walks of life together! The multi-nation team lead by Devon trained& celebrated especially hard on the 4th July. Cruising to the barn in Devon’s red Mustang convertible and then doing their warm up run in star & stripes tights with Devon wearing his Afro wig thru the local neighbourhoods street parade!
After 10 days of fun training we all travelled together the 5hr road trip with the horses Leo, Banksy & Wyeth (Blake’s horse) to Hollister 1 hour south of San Francisco. After settling the horses in at Gilroy Gates Equestrian Facility we all attended a Judges Workshop hosted by Susan Dettol & 5 FEI judges! Theme: Freestyle - “ Artistic Interpretation” …….wow! We were so excited to catch up with some international friends (Elin from Sweden surprised us!) and to meet personally some of the international stars we had only ever seen in photos!!
The 3 day competition started the next day Friday and after passing vet check, Devon’s horse Lincolm performed for 4 Individuals – 1 USA, 1 Columbian, 1 Russian, and 1 (little) Aussie and 1 PDD Columbian team. It was so awesome to be a part of such a multi-national vaulting family and Lincolm (Aka Leo) performed like a star with Devon’s expert lungeing.
Mckeira competed in CVI 1* Junior as it was her first ever CVI ….so she had to re-learn the C grade compulsories and only performed one round! (Considering her nerves/ stage fright 2 rounds would have been better!)
Mckeira received a Bronze medal 3rd in Junior 1* with a qualifying score for 2** thanks to all the amazing support of Devon, Leo & her multi-national team!
The overall result for Devon/ Lincolm Multi-National team was Katie Berube USA 4th CVI 2** Senior, Annie USA 1st CVI 2** Junior, Kristian Roberts USA 1st CVI 3*** Columbians Natalie & Silvia PDD 1st .
Leo was presented with a rug and McKeira got to stand on the blocks! As the little AUSSIE McKeira Cumming 3rd CVI !*Junior - youngest in class of 18 vaulters.
Regardless of the Results- it was an amazing experience. We learnt so much and had some awesome vaulting fun! Big thanks to Devon, Leo, Mary, Katie, Annie, Svetlana, Blake & his LA team, Rosie, Elin, Kristian Roberts, Ali Divita & Emma Sealy and of course our awesome Aussie cheer squad at home, Becky Hillman (Bestie Coach!) ELLA Springs vaulters and family, Kerrie Lani & Lee, Dad, Lach, Wendy, Ramon, Jannie & Nan - all keeping things going while we were away!
