A lifetime’s Passion Builds the Equestrian QLD CIC3* Country CourseLiz Buchanan, Friday, 12 March 2010With a lifetime passion for riding, training and competing in jumping and cross-country, FEI Candidate Course Designer, Sylvia Roberts, will bring the much anticipated Equestrian Queensland CIC3* event to life with a course which has all the hallmarks of a classic, competitive and exhilarating cross-country course. Locating to Warwick with her parents in 1970, Sylvia pursued her competitive goals in gymkhanas and One Day Events and was a representative on the Qld Pony Club Eventing team at the State Championships. Of this landmark life event, Sylvia said, “Alas I did not do too well as my little horse was a great jumper but had a phobia of those dreaded ditches. Elimination on the cross-country phase was a huge disappointment but it was the last time I was ever to be eliminated on a cross-country course”. Following a successful foray in the showjumping arena during her teenage years, Sylvia then took some time out of the saddle to focus on a Nursing career. With the advent of a young family, and unable to stay out of the saddle for too long, the next step in Sylvia’s riding career meant choosing a sport which fit with the schedule of having children. Next stop – Endurance, where Sylvia achieved recognition by placing in the top ten in the State and says, “Unfortunately I never got to ride in the Tom Quilty Gold Cup but did place 4th in the Warwick to Gold Coast 200k ride”. In 1988, Sylvia re-entered the sport of Eventing with her super-bold “jumping machine”, Dymintina Symphony. With combined competitive spirit, Sylvia and Symphony went from Preliminary to CCI2* in a mere 18months and won the QLD Horse and Rider of the year in 1995. It was during the 1995 Melbourne Three Day Event that Sylvia first developed her passion for course building and she recalls, “I was so blown away by the presentation of the course and the quality of the fences that I decided to develop a course in Warwick. This then became an obsession, which in turn began the Warwick Horse Trials. As I did not know how to design or build a cross country course, I sought the assistance of Felicity Cribb to give me some ideas on possible fences. I then started the hard way of building fences ...which very soon caved in or were not structurally sound”. With the assistance of Queensland elite riders donating their time as instructors (which is now known as the hugely popular Warwick Summer School) and with the subsequent money raised, Sylvia and work colleague, Simon Goddard, lobbied the local Council and the QLD State Sports and Recreation body for funding. With their combined tenacity, they were fortunate to be granted funding and in 1997, with the experience of Bill Thompson and the passionate enthusiasm of Sylvia, her husband Roger, Simon Goddard and Mick Lawlor, the Warwick Cross Country course was born. Over the next ten years, Sylvia continued with the Warwick course designing and was literally ‘hands-on’ in the fence construction. Having attended several EFA & FEI CD/TD seminars, it was International Course Designer, Brian Schrapel, who encouraged Sylvia to apply for an upgrade to FEI status as Course Designer. In 2009 Sylvia was promoted to an FEI Candidate Course Designer - one of only approximately seven women in the world on the FEI Course Designing list. In early 2010, Sylvia applied for the FEI Global Training Program which gives applicants the possibility of attending a major international event in a mentoring role. On being accepted, Sylvia says, “As one of only six Australian Officials and the only CD accepted, I feel very humbled to be included in this program and am very excited to say that I will be travelling to Paris in May to attend a FEI workshop at Jardy CCI/CIC with seven other international Course Designers from around the world. I hope to gain lots more experience from the international scene to bring back to Australia”. On her course design for the Easter Equestrian QLD CIC3* in Warwick, Sylvia’s passion for a thrilling, yet horse/rider-friendly course is evident when asked for her plans, saying, “For this event I have tried to keep the distances and efforts to a minimum as the event is very early in the season with horses possibly not being at their peak fitness. I have designed the course to encourage horse and rider combinations at each level but still given them some technical questions to keep their attention and focus throughout the course. After receiving lots of rain in the earlier part of the year the going should be excellent”. On her goals for the event, Sylvia continues, “I hope all competitors here at the Eventing Qld first FEI event will enjoy the challenge of the cross country course and all have a very safe and enjoyable weekend. I would like to thank all those who assisted in the preparation and presentation of the cross country and a very special mention to Sue Hoffman from Warwick Gardens Galore who allows me to borrow all the wonderful plants and ornaments to beautify the course. I would also like to sincerely thank all of the women in the Warwick Work Camp as without their devoted assistance we would not be able to bring this event to you”. With a full competition programme from Intro to 3* and a total prize pool of $10,000, nominations are closing soon. Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in an event which will really get your 2010 competition year off to a great start! Nominations via www.nominate.com.au

Changes to HSBC FEI World Cup Eventing a boost to NZ and Australian ridersLiz Buchanan, Tuesday, 9 March 2010New Zealand and Australian eventers now have chance to compete for a share of US$180,000 in the HSBC FEI World Cup. The FEI announced yesterday a new and exciting format for the HSBC FEI World Cupä Eventing series. Riders will now be competing for a top 15 place in the overall standings to take home a share of the US$180,000 prize pool on offer, rather than having to travel to Event organising committees of the "This new format means that riders who place well at two qualifiers – such as Kihikihi in New Zealand (2-4 Apr) and Sydney in Australia (7-9 May) have a really good chance of collecting a share of the significant prize pool” said Bruce Bason, Kihikihi Event Director. “We expect that the new format will see riders on both sides of the Tasman travel to Kihikihi and Sydney in order to secure maximum points and increase their chances of being in the top 15” added Bruce. "Unfortunately Megan Jones winner of both the New Zealand and Australian qualifiers last year could not go to the Final in Poland due to lengthy quarantine requirements, if this system applied last year, Megan would have placed 3rd overall (just 8 points behind the overall winner) and received a $US23,000 prize in addition to the significant prize money she collected at Kihikihi and Sydney" added Rose Read, Sydney Event Director. Kiwi and Aussie riders who travel across the Tasman to compete at either Kihikihi or Sydney will receive assistance with local travel, stabling and accommodation costs during by each event organsing committee. SaddlerySales.com Grand Prix Horse of the Year SeriesSharlene Smith, Tuesday, 9 March 2010The first round of the 2010 SaddlerySales.com Grand Prix Horse of the Year Series was run on Saturday at the Pittsworth Show. The showgrounds had over five inches of rain in the days leading up to the show and then another two inches overnight which left the grounds very wet for the main day of showjumping. A big thanks should go out to Robyn Kreig who was at the grounds helping park trucks from 6am and for forging ahead with the jumping program even though numbers were extremely down on previous years. Not only was it wet on the Darling Downs but the whole of Southern Queensland had received some of its biggest rainfall totals in years thus making it near impossible for many people to get to the show let alone work their horses. The Pittsworth Show has some of the best prize money on offer and was certainly worth getting some gear muddy for. The Grand Prix Class had only five starters. Graeme Watts built a small simple track which still took some jumping as the grounds at that stage made for some very heavy going. Clem Smith & Dark Ages opted to only start in the first round as not wanting to injury his horse prior to leaving for New Zealand next week & was placed 5th. The other four combinations went on to the second round with Jamie Raymont & Oz Lotto the 2009 Newcomer Horse of the Year jumping the only double clear and taking out first place. The other three horses in the jump off all finished with four faults with time separating the placings. Jamie’s second ride Seabreeze Celica was second followed by Robert Moffat’s It’s Ritchie in third & Clem’s second ride Noble Eros also on four faults placed fourth. It was a great day out for Jamie. The next round will be held as part of the Toowoomba Royal Grand Prix which is after Sydney Royal

Vale Glencoe Manhattan (aka Milo)Nicole Tough, Tuesday, 2 March 2010It is with great sadness that we say good bye to Milo, who died from colic on Monday 1st March. Such a huge heart, such a beautiful soul. Thankyou to all the people who loved him. He meant a great deal to me and to Sally. Thankyou to my coach, Traci Manca, who truly understood him and helped me to ride him so much better. I was often frustrated in my ability to do the best job with such amazing talent, but in the end I realised that Milo didn’t mind, and so I just got on with the task of trying to get better. I thought the decision to part with Milo just a year ago was one of the hardest I’ll ever make, but I thought the horse had been pushed enough, and it was time for him to be the teacher – and teach he did. I was so very proud of him. Thankyou to Milo’s owner and rider Sally Devlin. Although she only owned Milo for 12 months, she loved him a lifetime’s worth. She had grand goals of learning so much from Milo and one day maybe doing a Prix St George, but sadly this wasn’t to be. Thankyou to Sally’s coach, Linda Schmerglatt, who so gently undertook to the task of helping a new partnership take their wings. I wish you all had more time together. To Milo - Thankyou for allowing me the lead, to take you on my journey. And so now, we will not “cry because its over, but smile because it happened.” Goodbye my brave friend, we will remember you, and see you again one day. Nicole

Massive ring event schedule for Roma ShowMedia Release, Monday, 1 March 2010Ring events at this years 2010 Roma Show are set to be revamped with the appointment of Carla Cosgrove as chief horse steward for the first time. Ms Cosgrove said the position for ring events was vacant this year and she was was keen to lift the standard of the event schedule to be equal or better than other large regional shows around the state. "I’m really excited about the number of participants we can attract this year, it should be a massive year for the ring events schedule in Roma," Ms Cosgrove said. "There are lots of new events on the program coupled with good prizes for local and regional riders which should help to attract larger numbers to this years show." Ms Cosgrove said for the first time their will be a Stockmans Challenge which is sponsored by Fleming’s Welding Service. "The major prize for the challenge will be a four day double pass and accommodation (sponsored by EQUITANA Melbourne & Hotel Enterprize) to this years Equitana and Western Spectacular in Melbourne with return flights from Brisbane to Melbourne," she said. "The Stockman’s Challenge runs over three rounds and aims to demonstrate how versatile stock horse can be in the ring. "Three events will be run in the challenge including hack, working patterns and time trials. "The hack classes show how supple and obedient the horse is, the working classes show the ability of a horse to manoeuvre at all paces with control and obedience. The time trial is a test of the horse’s ability and tractability against the clock." Ms Cosgrove said another first for this years show will be the addition of a show hunter program sponsored by the Australian Hunter Horse Association. Hunter Horses are usually native European breeds and derive their name from foxhunt horses back in the 1500s. "Hunter horse are typically breeds that are sufficiently conditioned to compete on traditional all day fox hunts or working style horses for example," she said. "Hunter horse competitions are predominantly more popular in the southern states such as Victoria. Competition in this category is relatively new to Queensland but it gives riders with this type a horse an opportunity to ride exclusively in the class for the first time at the show." Other ring events for this years show include: Districts Hacks, Led Bred Classes, Adult Rider and Hack Classes, Beginner Ring, Dressage and Showjumping. For more information on the Roma Show Horse Section please call Carla Cosgrove 07 46226839 or email horsesectionRSS@bigpond.com. Check your responsibilities for travelling competition horsesDEEDI Queensland Primary Industries media release, Monday, 16 November 2009Following a recent breach involving a competition horse moving through cattle tick zones, Biosecurity Queensland is reminding all stock owners operating under the Competition Stock Owner Treatment Scheme (CSOTS) to comply with the requirements. Biosecurity Queensland's senior inspector Iain Purvis said the approval of a horse owner to participate in the CSOTS was cancelled for two years because a horse was not properly treated for ticks when travelling from the Queensland cattle tick Infected Zone. “Concessional schemes, such as CSOTS, have been in operation for more than 10 years and provide owners of competition stock, including horses, an alternative to normal tick line clearance,” he said. “These schemes allow stock owners situated in the cattle tick Free Zone to travel to competitions in the cattle tick Infected Zone and return home as long as stock are treated prior to return or upon return to their property of origin. “Before becoming eligible, stock owners must complete an Instruction and Awareness course. “They must also comply with the conditions of approval, including the requirement to possess a valid livestock travel permit and waybill for the movement. “If a person fails to comply with requirements for movement from the cattle tick Infected Zone or fails to comply with conditions of approval, the approval will be cancelled. “They cannot apply for readmission to any concessional scheme for two years, which means they must present competition horses at clearing centres, such as Helidon, at a pre-arranged time for clearance when returning from competitions.” For more information about concessional schemes contact your local Biosecurity Queensland office, visit www.dpi.qld.gov.au or contact the Business Information Centre on 13 25 23.

All NEW Horses being Registered with EA must be MicrochippedLiz Buchanan, Tuesday, 10 February 2009As per EA General Regulations As per EA General Regulations introduced in January 2008, horses to be registered after 01 July 2008 (for the first time) will need to be microchipped with chips that meet Australian Standards 5018/5019. From July 2011, all horses participating in "official" competition will need to be microchipped. We will encourage event organisers to arrange for microchipping sessions at some of their events to make the process more cost-effective for members. You may know that it has been compulsory for a number of years to microchip Thoroughbreds and that at least in NSW and Queensland, thousands of horses were microchipped when being vaccinated during the recent EI outbreak.
