Vale - Gerhard Wilhelm Quast (1931–2025)
A visionary breeder and beloved member of Queensland’s equestrian community.
Born in Lander, Germany, Gerhard arrived in Australia in 1965 and quickly made his mark - first as a successful strawberry farmer, then as a pioneer of Warmblood horse breeding. In 1975, he imported Monopol, Queensland’s first Warmblood stallion, followed by Falkland and Lander. His innovative use of Standardbred mares laid the foundation for a powerful breeding program that produced elite sport horses, including Falkrich, sire of World Cup showjumper Wirragulla Nicklaus and Grand Prix dressage horses Finagin and Frontier.
Gerhard founded the Holsteiner Breeders Association of Queensland in 1978, helping shape the future of Warmblood breeding in Australia. Known for his joyful spirit, water divining talents, and love of singing “You Are My Sunshine,” Gerhard leaves behind a legacy of excellence, innovation, and warmth.
Gerhard is survived by his sons, Roland and Andrew, and remembered fondly by breeders, riders, and horse lovers across Australia. His legacy lives on in every hoofbeat of the Warmbloods he helped bring to life.
Our heartfelt thoughts are with Gerhard’s family at this time.
