Timeline Photos In memory of the animals killed in war alongside (and often in aid of) human servicemen and women on #AnzacDay.
Animals are commonly used in war. Australia and New Zealand has sent horses, dogs and a donkey into war zones.
Eight million horses died in WWI, including horses shipped over for use by the NZ Mounted Rifles. These animals suffered stressful conditions for several weeks at sea and were then expected to work to exhaustion on reduced food in a dangerous, seasonally opposite climate. When the First World War ended the NZ horses that survived the fighting were left behind or shot apart from just five who returned home.
Please pass this on to help commemorate these forgotten victims.
