Driving Decoded - Round 1

Interested in driving at any level?

Or have you become a new owner of a retired off-the-track thoroughbred or standardbred, for riding or driving....
or are you looking for a place to learn more?  .... then...

Driving Decoded is for you!

10 - 11 July 2021, at Goombungee Showgrounds

This weekend is particularly designed for;

  • Already competent drivers looking to improve their dressage, marathon obstacle or cones obstacle driving skills, or who just want to get out and practice some dressage and obstacle driving,
  • Beginner and novice drivers looking to get into the sport of driving,
  • Drivers whose horse is only at the long reining stage and would like lessons to progress,
  • Owners of off-the-track or bred-for-racing thoroughbreds or standardbreds, who would like some one-on-one time with a coach, for free, for sessions in horsemanship, riding or driving,
  • Driving, or potential driving judges who would like more information, or a chance for reaccreditation,
  • Driving, or potential driving coaches, especially level 2 EA dressage, general riding or eventing coaches who would like more information about becoming accredited to coach FEI drivers in their dressage skills.

Driving members who might be willing to be demo drivers for the Sunday, please contact the Driving Queensland (DrQ) committee for more information.

Everyone who gets on a carriage, either to drive or to backstep, must be EA members, and must wear an approved helmet.  Body protectors are compulsory for drivers under 18 years and anyone training around marathon obstacles.  These can be borrowed on the day as needed. 

SATURDAY 10 JULY

Featuring the following Coaches -

  1. Debbie King, EA Level 2 Driving Coach
  2. Bob Edwards, EA Level 2 Driving Coach,
    Coach Educator, Course Designer
  3. Danielle Shearer, EA Level 1 Dressage Coach
  4. Lisel Dingley, EA Introductory Coach

There will be a lunchtime presentation focussed on restarting the thoroughbred and standardbred, and also a question and answer session on ANY topic for ANY coach.

SUNDAY 11 JULY 

This day is particularly aimed at;

  • Educating potential Judges and Officials,
  • Reaccrediting current Coaches,
  • Reaccrediting current Judges,
  • Educating and informing potential Driving Coaches,
  • Educating and informing those who are already Riding Coaches who would like to add Driving to their skillset,
  • As well as anyone interested in learning about the sport of driving.

Start Time Session Description
9:00 am Investigating Driving Dressage  A demo horse and driver will drive the FEI One Star test, with Irene Bakels-Noreen (EA Level 2 Coach/Coach Educator, Dressage / Para and Driving Judge) and Bob Edwards (EA Coach and FEI Driver) providing commentary.
10:00 am Q and A during break  
10:15 am Driving/Judging the Cones Course A demo horse and driver will drive through the Cones course, after discussions about course set up, and walking the course.  Discussion about how the Cones course is judged, including rules.
11:15 am Q and A during break  
11:30 am Driving/judging the Marathon Obstacle A demo horse and driver will drive two different obstacles, after discussions about course set-up and walking the course.  Discussion about rules and how an obstacle is judged.
12:30 pm Q and A during lunch  
1:30 pm Pathway introduction for new drivers and horses Participants are encouraged to ‘judge’ with Irene (Dressage) and Bob (Cones) at the Judges’ table, while a number of horses ‘compete’.  This activity will confer reaccreditation for judges already on the Driving Judge list, as well as the opportunity to ask questions.
