Rescheduled 2021 Barastoc Youth Championships Wrap

The 2021 Rescheduled Barastoc Youth Dressage Championships ran smoothly and successfully!  In the lead up to the event, many of us had been holding our breath thinking we'll get locked down again.  There were times when it would have been easy to throw our hands in the air and say it was just all too hard. But due to the tenacity and determination of Anita Barton... it was going to happen and it did!

An exceptional display of talented riding, congratulations to all riders and horses.

This year the Barastoc Youth Championships ran for the first time in Australia the FEI Childs Championship. It came about after former Olympian and EA board chair Dr Ricky McMillan suggested to Anita Barton chair of Dressage Queensland the opportunity an FEI Children Championship would provide to our youngest riders.  To be eligible a competitor from the beginning of the calendar year of their 12th birthday to the end of the calendar year of their 14th birthday. Ponies or horses are eligible for CDI competitions but must be six-years-old or over.

The championship consists of two tests a technical assessment and a rider assessment in terms of degree of difficulty the tests are equivalent of a difficult Novice/Easy Elementary test.

We were very grateful to the wonderful panel of judges who gave of their time for the Barastoc Youth Dressage Championships.

To become a dressage judge is an onerous responsibility, it just doesn’t happen it take years of training, mentoring, commitment, dedication and experience.

They don’t just score your test their goal is to have you succeed and enjoy our sport of dressage.

In Australia we are incredibly lucky to have three five star judges. Two are on our ground jury this weekend, Mary Seefried and Maria Schwennsen.  Mary has just returned from Tokyo Olympics were she officiated as the dressage Technical Delegate.

Also at Tokyo was Victorian five star judge Susie Hoovenars.

To all our judges who have sat at our event an extra special thank you for your contribution, and know you have made a difference -
Mary Seefried, Maria Schwennesen, Irene Bakels-Noreen, Trisha Sellers, Sandi Gillott, Sheryl Hering, Emma Flegman, Jacqui Huppert, Elizabeth Coe, Tracy Rathjen, Janifer Willis, Karen Herald, Keith Smith, Julie Watson, Elizabeth Coe, Karen Crommelin, Kay Paulsen, Christine Allen, Jill Smit, Jenny Rykoff, Liz Gatti, Naomi O’Farrell, and  Simone Saunders.
